On Keeping
To take a photograph is to interrupt. To keep one is to witness. The difference decides everything about how we work on a wedding day.
We do not arrange people into pictures. We wait near the true things — the hands, the doorways, the last instructions whispered before a ceremony — and we keep them as they are.
Years later, no one asks whether a photograph was sharp. They ask whether it was true.
